Even though it moves easy, is the bushing loose? I.e., is there any "wiggle" in the sheave? The old 425 cubers I took care of for years had the same drive as a 55 combine, basically the same as your 4400. When the sheave bushings got worn, they would bind under load & not slide. Those cubers put quite a load on the drive, they had to tow a dump wagon thru the field, & the machine itself was pretty heavy...the 6V-71 Detroit didn't show much mercy, either- lotta poop for a belt drive. the owner had a spare sheave built up to change out when one got to acting up-of course they usually shucked a belt in the middle of the county road somewhere...if you have somebody operate the variable while you watch, you might be able to see what's going on, watch for jerks & jumps in the sheave center as it slides. If it hangs up one belt will get loose & the other tight. I'm having to dig pretty far back in the memory banks to think about these again....
