Subject: RE: Best metal lathe

Wallis, TX
Monarch, Clausing, leblond, Lodge & Shipley among many others. Older ones turn fairly slow, often too slow for carbide tooling but I manage to get by. Condition of the old iron can range from junk to really good. They were built like tanks to last a lifetime. But,,,, they’re two lifetimes old!!! Keep an eye on auctions, every once in a while you can find an engineering department sell off, those are often lightly used and been in controlled environment, little or no rust.

I have a 12x 40 (I think that the size) for sale, came from Houston ISD. The downside its 3phase. Upside, I have a quick change tool post for it. Overall condition is fair/good. I replaced it with a 15” Clausing that a friend had replaced with an 17” lathe. See a pattern here??? LOL
