The old American iron is the best, but lots of them are getting pretty well clapped out. Grizzly or Jet are pretty good import machines. I have a 12" Craftsman (Atlas) that is maligned & run down by the lathe snobs, but I have done a lot of work & made a lot of parts on it...I have a WWII military Sheldon that I picked up pretty cheap, it's in the mid stages of a rebuild right now.
Get as much tooling with the lathe as you can, it's like buying a tractor, you have to have implements to make it useful...
I passed up a brute of a "Large & Shapely" (Lodge & Shipley) a few years back, the guy was too proud of it & wouldn't budge on the price.
