Iowa | I have a 16" southbend mostly because it was the first one I found on craigslist close to home and in good condition.
I knew nothing about lathes at the time. The best money I have spent so far are how to videos from this man- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7owN_lvtUE
After the fact and reading online forums and such a lot of people feel there are better lathes than southbend however there is enough of a following there seems to be pretty decent support for these antiques. No-you can't get everything new but they aren't a complete oddball and common parts and restoration manuals seem to be on ebay and the internet in general.
From what I gather- a southbend heavy 10 is a desirable lathe for home shops. Nothing wrong with getting a small affordable lathe to learn on then sell it for something different later after you know what you want.
