south central WI | Part of my decision would be the kind of year(s) I had. If it has been rough and money is tight, I think I would sell the cows instead of spending money on keeping them. If I had the cash, then I might be more apt to buying some feed. You know your expenses better than anyone here. More cows also spreads the fixed expenses out over more cows.
If feed is tight in a large area around you, consider buying the feed now instead of waiting until closer to spring. You may overbuy, but feeds gets more expensive later in winter, especially in a short feed year. If you have plenty, you could sell the excess off, possibly for a profit. | |
