We have been on a fiscal year and have had problems nearly every year because they never read the form and see it's fiscal. The latest is about tax year 2017, for 2 years they were reporting that we had money sitting there but no matching form. Now we are getting letters demanding we pay (that same amount) plus interest and penalty. The latest letter is threatening seizure of property. They list several easy ways to pay but absolutely no way to contest and correct their mistake. Every letter gets sent to my attorney and he responds but evidentially no one is on the other end who cares.

What do I do next? Contact my senator and representative? Maybe Grassley could make it an election aid item.

That’s just how the IRS is (dis)functioning now. In the last 6 months we’ve sent a payment, had it refunded, resent it, they deposited it, then notified us we needed to pay, threatened property seizure for non payment, all because they hadn’t properly credited what we paid. Turns out that they dump all received checks in to some general fund immediately and then credit the payments later. They had the money, they were just behind on the part where they put in their system that it came from us. It was a six figure amount so we weren’t about to just pay it again and hope it got re-refunded later.

Hours and hours on the phone. Government shouldn’t be allowed to handle money.
