Wisconsin | Standard, full size apple trees have a lot of advantages. Commercial apple production has moved to dwarf trees in a row like corn, but with wires on each side, clean dirt on for several feet out, which has economic advantages. But if you're not going to stake and keep the ground sprayed around an apple tree, then a standard tree will be more competitive with sod, and most important, it will reach a diameter that is resistant to voles and rabbits sooner. St Lawrence nursery out of New York is big on standard trees.
