Subject: RE: Best apple tree varieties of old

coast of Maine
All commercial trees do not grow the same tree from the seed.Perhaps similar but all trees are grown on a parent root stock with cuttings grafted on from the true tree.Yes ,in the old days 100s and 100s of old tree types existed. There still are dozens and dozens to choose from.If you find this special tree type and it tastes the same you can graft a few cuttings onto a tree that already is growing in your yard. Not hard to do at all. This will give you that tree producing fruit way quicker than a nursery tree. Some varieties fall out of favor with consumers(maybe cause the buyers who own chains only want to sell what is durable and makes the most $$)then growers will stump cut off an old tree knee high and graft a few cuttings into stub of the more in demand tree, with a major root system already established.
