One of the blessings and curses of being first generation farmer is there is no such thing as opportunity cost when you start out, its an actual cost because everything had to be paid for. Your not getting dads old disc to trade in on something newer or plasma cutter to use. It forces you to think outside the box to be able to compete with others who were fortunate enough to get a head start.

I'm told what I do "here" doesn't work by people who are shoving dirt back up the hills on an annual basis because they wash every single year. Does that work? I guess so they get big yields, but they have to after spending a fortune on equipment, fuel and inputs their retailers convince them into putting on to get them.

If I can get 50-60 bushels an acre more than the county average on corn while getting .73 pounds of N per bushel utilization and 15-20 bu/ac more on beans without expensive tillage passes than I think I am doing things right and reducing my impact on the environment at the same time.
