The best diesel is about 26% efficient as I recall.
Most electric vehicles are over 90% efficient.

Modern Diesel engines are running about 43-44% efficient according to this article (as of 2013)

https://theicct.org/blogs/staff/ever-improving-efficiency-diesel-eng...

Modern compression-ignition diesel engines dominate the commercial trucking industry with efficient engines that convert about 43%–44% of fuel energy into engine work, based on 2013–2014 certified engines.

A power plant recently set an all time efficiency record, at 62.22%, according to this article:

https://www.ge.com/gas-power/resources/articles/2016/power-plant-eff...

GE & EDF unveil a game-changer at Bouchain: a 62.22% efficiency rating for a combined-cycle power plant has never been achieved before… until now.

Also, I don't know where you get your 'over 90% efficient' number for EVs, but I'm willing to go with it, I know they are pretty darn good with things like regenerative braking and such. Anyway, 90% of 62% by my calculations comes out to 55.8%, which is still 11-12% better than a diesel, but it is not the huge difference that many make it out to be.
The EV may be 90% effieicnt at turning electricity to power, but the power plant is at the very best 62% efficient at turning fuel into electricity.
Now, if you hook it to a nuclear plant, especially a FAST plant, then I'm with you, an EV is the way to go.
