The best diesel is about 26% efficient as I recall.
Most electric vehicles are over 90% efficient.
The 26% number is too low. 35% is more realistic.
Besides that, efficiency numbers don't tell the whole story. The electricity to drive that car is generated, transported long distances, fed into your car, stored in a battery, and then it gets to the 90%-efficient motor/tire stage.
The overall system efficiency of an electric car from fuel source to tire is probably no better than the efficiency of a gas car from oil well to tire. The difference is that most of the pollution is generated at a power station where the pollutants are easier to scrub out of the exhaust. Also, an electric car has the potential to draw its power from wind, solar, or nuclear. A gas vehicle doesn't have that opportunity at all. |
