The Pretender - 10/8/2021 12:46

There's plenty of people around here finding the money for £100,000+ Range Rovers. Every time I think I could be able to afford a new car in the next year or two, they put the price of things up, so I'm back looking at 3-5 year old replacements.

There will always be a market for almost end of life cars for people to run on a shoe string. Poor people, or people who choose to run old beaters, have always accepted that they have to compromise on reliability, and thus range. The person in the market for a £1,000 car just wants it to go, they accept they're not going to be able to jump in it, load the family into it and take it to the south of France or the Swiss Alps for 2 weeks skiing. They will mostly be doing local trips. Some of the early Nissan Leafs will be getting a bit leggy now. There's a 16-year-old Prius in town, and a lot run as taxi's have intergalactic mileages on them.

I do agree with the points you are making. People are coming up with the cash to buy new even with price increases. Also, that a bottom end $1-2000 car is not going to be thought of as reliable long distance transportation.

Fortunately my wife and I have worked hard and tried to be careful with our money and can afford nice vehicles. I still see a difference up coming for low income earners. For example, my cousin bought a Honda Civic hybrid. He paid about $5000 for the car (first car for a 16 year old). After driving for a month the battery was very weak. He was able to find a used battery out of a crashed car, but it still cost him $3500. He had the money, so it was fine. But, I look at people just starting out in life making $15-20 per hour. After they pay for food, clothing and housing, there is not much left for transportation. Right now they can buy a $1500 gas car and spend a couple hundred dollars here and there. But if we go full electric, spending thousands on a replacement battery would not be possible for them.

I am not anti electric car. My point is I hope there can be compromises made to keep transportation cheap for those that can barely afford it. Lower income people often have to drive a long ways for work when they live in the country. I have respect for those lower income earners that stayed working last summer even when they could have been making $950+ a week on unemployment. Those are the people I don’t want to be left behind. Our economy needs them and I believe they should have upwards mobility within the economy.
