Southern MN | I think The U f M station at Lamberton uses 4’ in its calculations for normal root depth. I will say this year I am shocked how little cracking there is in the soil. There are cracks but not large cracks you can drop a beverage can down, which tends to happen a good share of the years. I think planting conditions and the fact we never had any hard rain has kept the dirt loose enough that cracks are not developing like I expected them to. The math for corn water usage and usable water in the soil tables from Lamberton also tells us the corn should basically be dead already. The only real variable that can add inches of available water to the plant is moisture from the subsoil, which leads me to the much deeper roots than expected hypothesis. Share if you would the results from your root digs. | |
