Iowa | I have not had much problem with bearings going out before the blades get worn down and need to be replaced anyway. This could be for three reasons (or maybe I was lucky):
Most of the rocks have been picked up and less deep tillage means we are not bring many more new rocks to the surface.
I'm running a notill coulter ahead of the disk openers, so the disk openers are sheltered from most of the abuse and the soil in their path is softened up a little.
I'm using the old school spring down pressure springs. Although I have no experience with automated down force, I have to wonder if it really works as well as advertised. How accurate is the calibration of these systems? If measuring the down force at 300 pounds and the monitor in the cab says it is three hundred pounds, will it really still be 300 pounds after a couple hours, the next day, or the next week? How much does the downforce change when the planter unit hits a rock or a 5 inch rise in the ground level? The old school springs are somewhat predictable in these regards and are not likely to do anything crazy, but it seems to me there are a lot of things that can go wrong with automated downforce that may or may not show up on the monitor. Again, I have no real experience with it and have not seen much need for it in my conditions. It just seems to me that automated downforce could possibly cause some damage if it has some glitches.
