Nw Iowa | Reminds me of the 80’s corn reserve program. We had everything full we could fill. We had a all steel straight wall butler building that was designed for corn 10’ up the walls full. Had a 60x120’ pole building filled to 10’ also, if I remember over 80000 bu, Just had plastic on the floor and cables at ground level and cables at4’ or 5’ to hold it together. Was full for two or three years. Building was alittle pushed out when we emptied it but kind of straightened out over time. Also had a 60x80 full but had it cementand 2x12” laid up the walls 10’ that were bought at a lumberyard auction. We also had every round bin we could fill.
Helped get us thru the farm crisis but a lot of work. The cement buildings we just used a auger and loader tractor, I believe we hired a vac on the dirt floor with plastic. I know all the corn went to town with very little dock. Since than have acquired a site with some 40x100 Butlers that we used to fill up to 12’ and just used a pay loader with a extra large bucket to empty out and move grain about a 100’ ft and dump in a pit to a overhead bin for load out and that worked really well but buildings were getting old and now just used for storage We had talked about putting a large cement walled building for corn but than went a different direction. Was always kind of fun to get in there and empty them out.
You could really increase your capacity with a 4’ liner in bottom and make clean up easier and not hurt building much even if you went up walls only a couple of ft. | |
