It is a magnesium and potassium deficiency as others have said. I often get them too, to the point where my foot will bend right up! It is painful, and it usually happens during the night for me.
I will hobble to the kitchen and lick some pink himalyan salt, and the cramping disappears. I take an electrolyte powder once a day which helps, but sometimes I just need more. I keep a container of muscle cramp/tension relief tablets (from the naturopath dr) in the cupboard for severe cases.
Good luck with the charlies, they are most painful, I can relate.
