Great news! I can report that the RS232 to TTL converter with the MAX3232 chip has worked for me to hardwire my connection between my rover and my Versa.

I currently sitting at my desk with my Integra and sparkfun board and MAX3232 chip in front of me. Can you explain how you wired it??

****Edit*** i have connection! Just have to get some nmea settings configured correctly. Only at one hz
