We ran a planter one year where the 2x2 fertilizer was sometimes 3" or a little more on a couple rows. The coulters just didn't fit on the old 7000.

Aaaaanyway, severe yield loss from shading. 3 rows got going later because they weren't as close to the fertilizer. We shelled and weighed those rows separately. It was about a 25 bpa difference. Doesn't say anything about starter really...just that you need to be consistent across all rows.

We split plant our largest field every year but I think we've had enough. Tricky to get good singulation with the vac. Plus we don't like that when it comes to harvest we can't easily shell the drier hybrid first. We don't want what's left to get blown over.
