Some schools have carpet over the old 9"x9" floor tiles that have asbestos in them. Not trying to scare anybody, as long as the 9x9 aren't severely crumbling they are safe. Carpeting over them provide/s an extra layer of protection until full removal can occur. I've worked in schools for 19 years and both tile and carpet have their strengths/weaknesses.
