So it sounds like for the most part opinions from a parents point of view have been thrown out there so I guess I will throw out mine as a younger guy whose class mates are only a few years out of college. I really think most 4 year degrees have become bloated with useless garbage. Lots of irrelevant classes that cost several hundred a credit and get you no where. Seems like most people are going to school to get a degree because that is what their friends and family have done and expect them to do, and very little thought is put in to what that degree will do for them in the future. I noticed a good 25% of the students that graduated in the years around me were going to school for business, but had no plans or intentions for that degree, this also flooded the market with people with business degrees and no real world experience, reducing the pay potention, making that 20k a year education much more difficult to pay for. Now I hear a lot from my peers about how hard life is financially and how they couldn't buy a house if they want to and how student loans are dragging them down and the jobs they can get only pay 30k a year. I went to a 2 year school myself, cost less than 10k a year and had job offers before I graduated, I also worked on the farm for my dad in that time and managed to pay cash for school. My wife got a ONE YEAR degree, for around 10k, also paid for up front with the exception of a small loan that was easy to pay off in the first year. 18 months after we graduated from our tech schools we had already saved up to put 10% down on a house, which thanks to our lack of student debt is almost half paid off after only a few years. Oh by the way, my wifes 1 year degree earns her an income in the top 15% in the state. Now maybe how things worked out for us is an extreme exception, I don't really know, but it seems like a 4 year degree is a distraction anymore and won't simply lead to opportunity like it would have in the past. I do know that I have had very good job offers to work on trucks full time, jobs as a welder, jobs in the building trades, and also in manufacturing, all of those offers had decent money and benefits, with on the job training amd most importantly there was no school debt to work half my life or more paying off.

No I will throw in a quick bit as a parent. I don't want my kids to go to college. I simply don't think that is where the best opportunities are anymore. Now I can see where that may change before they get to that age, lots of time yet before that happens. But I would rather they go out and learn real skills at a job and learn how to take advantage of them. And if they do really want to go to college they need to really know what opportunities will come from that degree and have a passion for whatever that may be. Bottom line is I don't want to see my kids spending what may be over 100k by their time on school when in the big picture it may not even get them ahead in life. I would much rather they learn to take advantage of their skills and learn to enjoy life.
