Subject: RE: Good Read

Farmington, Mo
Excerpt from article:

How can farmers build a team that will be successful in the future?

“In times of rapid change, no matter how good the staff is, no matter how much foresight the administrators have, the educational curriculum will always be irrelevant by the time it gets to the kids. You’re not going to be able to hire the staff you want—you’re going to have to raise them, which means looking for college grads or post college grads is probably not the place to start. It’s better to start in high school, and if you have the time horizon, elementary school.“

I like reading or listening to Mr Zeihan. He usually has an interesting perspective you don’t hear from other talking heads. This last question and subsequent answer really caught me off guard...particularly the part about raising the Team instead of looking for college graduates.

His contention is that education is always behind the curve. As a father of 6 with my oldest going to college next fall, this is particularly troubling to me. Aside from building a potential farm team out of some of my kids, how do I advise my kids when it comes to higher education that puts them in a good position to get great jobs that will give them the quality of life they want? Do I push them to go the contrarian route and get training for skilled trades or do I push them to go the four year degree route like everyone else does?

College is getting mighty expensive...I wonder if my kids are the last generation of our country where blanket college attendance will be feasible?
