ADS-B is the "new" way for planes to communicate their position. Planes equipped with ADS-B out broadcast their GPS position and planes equipped with ADS-B in can receive it and will display their position on a screen or whatever. Almost all planes are required to have ADS-B out sometime in 2020. The pi is ADS-B in and then transmits the information to my ipad and displays it on a moving map. It was an assemble it, download the software and run type of project.
I've just started flying again. Moving maps and ADS-B are very slick.

The linear actuator had an internal potentiometer. The arduino would read it and position the actuator appropriately.
