What does a null modem cable do? Will I fry my Insight or Mojo?

Subject: What does a null modem cable do? Will I fry my Insight or Mojo?

I'm worried I'm going to fry my Insight or my Mojo console if I try what I really want to try right now. As many of you know, the NMEA in connector on the site verification kit for the Insight is a 9 pin female connector with nuts rather than thumb screws for securing it to another device. Therefore, whatever connects to it has to be 9 pin male, and thumbscrews rather than nuts. The NMEA out on the Mojo is not that way. It is 9 pin male, but it has nuts just like the Insight end has so there is no way to connect them together because the nuts hit against one another before it will connect. So the question is, do I need a null modem cable, or just an adapter?

If I just need an adapter, I have no idea how you would even make something that has thumbscrews pointing both directions so it would have to have a cable between two ends I guess.

If I need a null modem cable, then I'm also stuck there. I've got two null modem cables, and neither of them will work, but they will work if I combine them (and I'm worried that will effectively negate what a null modem cable does and fry something). I have the null modem cable that came with the Insight which is part number 2000819. I also have a Trimble null modem cable that we use with the EZ-Guide+ which is part number 18532 Rev C. Neither of them has the appropriate ends, but if I put them all together in a chain, it works out. Mojo NMEA to Trimble null modem to Ag Leader null modem to Insight. I'm sure I'll have to buy the correct cable but for right now, this Saturday morning, if this will work, it will get me going.

I'm afraid to plug it in though. I thought null modem cables (for some reason or another) switched pins. If I switch them twice wouldn't I just be getting back to where I started? Could I test the pins coming out of the chain (that ends on the Insight end of the Agleader null modem cable) with a voltmeter to determine whether there is any harmful voltage that will fry the Insight?

These types of situations would be a lot easier if I could learn what the purpose of the null modem cable is. Or any cable for that matter. What does pin 1, 2, 3 etc do? I don't know where to go to start learning this stuff. Any suggestions on learning this stuff so I can understand the fundamentals rather than just following directions (plug A into B) would be great but what would be especially nice for the immediate future is if anyone can tell me if I'm going to fry something doing what I'm trying to do. Thanks
