JD was not the market leader tech wise but they did over take IH tractor sales wise in the late 50s with the 2 cylinders.  That's a little know fact.  I read somewhere when IH introduced the 460 and 560 in 1958, the JD engineers took one look at them and were delirious with glee knowing what was coming down the pipeline with their own tractors.
