That was the point of the whole post. Can you start farming from scratch and have a completely sustainable business and provide a living for yourself/family without external income, and yes I would include custom work and side jobs as external income artifically funding a "traditional" farm.

I agree. I have been artificially supplementing my farm for 30 years. I had to. Its been hard work paying off and tiling my ground, building and paying for a house, keeping insurance and working towards retirement income and putting 3 kids through college. This was with my dads help. I didn't buy any equipment for the first 5 years I farmed. I couldn't.
