Subject: RE: What is a family farm

Freedom, WI
I think it is a farm who runs almost entirely by family, but if they have 1 or 2 employees, those employees are good friends to the farmer. Believe it or not, most (if not all) dairy farms started as family farms. MilkSource, CalfSource, and HeiferSource all started at a family farm in Wisconsin run by John Vosters dad. Now MilkSource farms (I think there are 5 farms milking cows) each milks around 5000 head, have 640 acres in Kansas for raising heifers, and about 250-300 for raising calves. That is the opposite from a family farm- that is a corporate farm.
