There are no supplements, there are meal replacements, which is basically expensive protein powder with vitamin and minerals, with a bit of fish oil, and tasting so bad that you'll never eat more than the quantity you're supposed to! ;)

Your friend's advice sounds good, stick to lean meats or boiled eggs, no dairy, pasta, bread or fat except for maybe a spoonful of raw cold pressed oil like olive a day, no processed food and if you can, no fruit juice either, stick to raw produce mostly, especially since Spring has arrived. Lots of green salads, grated carrots or grated raw beets, these are fillers that will keep your stomach and brain satiated. Control portions and meal regularity. Replace potato with parsnip, don't eat too much fruit either, it's mostly sugar. I read over a month ago that mixed soups are much better for weight loss than non-mixed, try that too. Take the opportunity to improve your knowledge and usage of spices, thyme for meat and vegetable, curry or saffron for rice, caraway or anise seeds for grated roots, scallions and garlic for salads, etc. They really enhance flavors when you are removing or reducing animal or vegetable fat. That should get you down 10 pounds before 2 weeks if you stick to it.

You can then expand your diet a bit and make a few more exceptions, the most important thing is portion control, and give up on processed foods for a while.
