Assume were talking about 50lb bags mine uses that much in about 5 or 6 months, removing 30 grains of hardness and about 750 gallons of water before a recycle routine. You might want to double check your settings or make sure you don't have a leak somewhere. I really doubt that you will get enough salt in the root zone to do any harm. We have had water softeners at my dad and grandpas house for at least 30 years and we don't have any dead spots or any noticeable areas where laterals run.
