First, tomosakis, your slab home idea would require double the roofing and take up land for the future addition. Double the concrete work, too. More siding, etc. And, with a big garage and only 1000 sq. ft. of living space, it could look like you built a garage and then the house was an afterthought. Sorta "Tail Waggin' the Dog"... You do make a good point of planning ahead for that future addition. I think RSSS and others have missed the fact that by combining the three gable dormers into one shed dormer, the divider wall between the Master Bedroom and the Living Room will run into that larger dormer. Still very do-able, but with three windows in the dormer. I suggest one wider window in the center flanked by two smaller ones, spaced out according to the thickness of said wall and DON'T forget the interior casing of the windows! It might look a little awkward from the inside, with windows crammed in the corners of the bedroom and the living room, but it would save framing cost and make the interior spaces more liveable. I respecfully disagree with ya Yoosta . . . I'm not following your concept either - double the roofing ? Double the concrete? (that could be my problem) I would agree withTom, it would be less expensive to simply build a patio home on floating slab, of the same sq footage, in Mn, then the garage and living space above. Quite a bit less expensive. I wasn't able to get the whole web page to load when I opened it the first time - RSSS is correct also, the whole back wall is a shed dormer . . .thats what gives it more space up there. The front 3 dormers could be combined and made into a shed dormer and kept out of the bedroom space. It wouldn't affect the bedroom sq footage. It would be around 12 or 14ft of added space slightly off center up there. That garage and living space would be around 110 bucks a square ft and likely more. A patio home on floating slab would be around 80bucks a sq ft. - at least around me.
