After reading through the "Office Everywhere" and "Practical" sections on Crop Ventures website I have to disagree. I think their point is that you do not have to buy a dedicated device. It sounds like their approach is for each farmer to simply use their smartphone with whatever machine they're using as an alternative to dedicated devices. They'll have to target customers that already have smartphones.

I really like this app approach. Our operation bought a John Deere GS2630 console a couple years ago and it cost us $8,000. The StarFire antenna we bought cost around $2,500. There were some software unlocks and cables as well. I think our total cost ended up being close to $18,000 and we got about 10 inch pass-to-pass accuracy. I don't know what kind of repeatable accuracy it gets. We move our John Deere precision stuff from machine to machine because it cost so much. We've lost out on collecting data from time to time because we'll be running two machines at once, but only have the one setup.

With Crop Ventures solution I could buy seven iPads and seven CAN Plugs for the same amount of money. I don't know what their Cloud stuff or Machine Command software costs yet, but if it's priced competitively our operation could finally afford to have dedicated equipment.
