While what you say is true, tablets have way better screens than any tractor monitor I've ever had. Also there are tablets with e-ink screens or PixelQi screens that would have a readability in bright sunlight that no standard color LCD screen is every going to have. I've been thinking CNH, John Deere, and others should have been investing in PixelQi or similar technologies because they are ideal for the harsh lighting conditions in a cab throughout the day. The old black and white LCD monitors were *way* more readable than today's AFS 700, and the like. And at night a gentle backlight is sufficient.

As for ruggedness, there's nothing inherently rugged about the screens in your current monitors on the tractors. The hardware (electronics, the cpu) is hardened of course. But the LCDs are off-the shelf units under a resistive positioning layer.
