Seems to me that I remember occasionally sticking my finger in a hole (1" pipe thread plug?) to get some gears to line up and slide into place before hauling on the clutch. It sounds maybe like the gears aren't meshing and you have to spin one with your finger in order for the lever to move the whole way. Two lever system, right?
