Another quick check for a pony motor that won't even pop is to swap the plug wires at the magneto. All the horizontal opposed pony motors are even fire, so you can easily be 180* out of time.

A good set of spark plugs. CAT used to supply Champions, may still do. Lots of folks say they're junk anymore. NGK AB-6, Autolite, AC etc seem to last better with the sometimes over rich mixture from choking one of these little buggers.
