Subject: Re: CAT pony motor/diesel starting problem

west Nebraska northeast Colorado
I have a D4, 7U Series. The 6 volt battery for the pony motor doesn't spin the it very fast, especially in cold weather. To solve this I will disconnect the 6 volt battery and jump start the pony motor from a 12 volt battery. Before I spin the diesel I hook up the 6 volt battery so the generator is "correctly back in the system". My tractor has a magneto so the ignition system is unaffected by using the 12 volt jumper. I don't spin the starter for the pony motor too long with 12 volts, suspect it would get too hot.
