Another consideration is soil type.  Dad and Mom built their house on sand.  It's like a sandbar. They have a basement with 36" wide footers.  The contractor said "I've never put in footers this wide"

Dad said "ever built a house on sand in the river bottom?"

However thick you make the walls, don't skimp in a nice wide reinforced footer to hold everything up.
