Imo they are worth more as breds than opens. I will leave the bulls in for about 90 days, but the last couple years about 60 days into calving, I will take what hasn’t calved yet to the cow sale. A year or two of doing this and the late bred numbers really dwindle. Still a few but not near as many as used to be. Will keep back a few extra replacements to make up for these lost numbers.


Given my calving season and the lack of bred cow sales here during the summer I would have to calve things out to have any market for them--unless I really trust the vet's ultrasound and sell them bred in the second trimester. But either way they could be sold. Sounds a bit like when I culled hard for assisted births and in like two years I had pretty much eliminated that issue out of my herd. Been keeping extra replacements from the first 30 days of calving and putting some breeding pressure on them so that should help over time as well.
