How hot is the exhaust pipe as it exits the stove?

Pellet wood type makes all the difference. Dont be afraid to try different pellet brands that have different wood types. I burn 100 douglas fir soft wood pellets in my pettoees with great luck. Even then, I can tell which brand I have at any given time as some brands use better quality wood. I personally try to stay away from pellets  that have glues or binder chemicals to hold the pellets together.

Other question is do you have the combustion air coming in from outside or just pulling air from the room?
