Subject: SoDak’s comments on Grain fill temps - model observations

C IL
Used AdvantageAcre to look at our weather this year and last, and projected weather for the rest of 2018 (uses WeatherTrends in the background, I believe, for projections).

This is a model for corn growth stage and weather on our farm, roughly 30 miles S of Decatur, IL. All models are imperfect, some are useful.

Same hybrids, 113 day. Fields across the road from each other so weather record is the same.

2017 corn:
Replanted May 17
R1 silking July 17
R6 black layer Sep 22
67 days of grain fill
AdvAc won’t display observed temp record that far back for some reason
Huge chunk of Grain fill in August at 71 degree average temps and 3 degrees below norm.

2018 corn:
Planted May 2
R1 silking Jun 29
R6 black layer Aug 21
53 days of Grain fill
Huge chunk of Grain fill in July at projected 80-degree average temps and 3 degrees above norm.

We are well watered at this point, I don’t know to what extent that aids Grain fill in higher temps.

53 days vs 67 - the sugar and photosynthesis factory runs for 80% of the time period as last year. Can it produce 25% more sugar everyday in high temps with adequate wate? I am not agronomist enough to know.
