Scranton | Dad bought a Massey 540 combine in 1979 and while it never broke him financially, there were days when it put him at the end of his rope mentally. That thing wouldn't go a day without some breakdown...lots of shafts, bearings, the variable speed...endless. Heck, it broke down driving home brand new. It def made him gunshy about buying/renting more acres. He planted with a 4 row, then an 8 row, but harvest was always his bottleneck.
OTOH, he raised a family of 11 kids on 365, then 550 acres. Lost him in 95 to cigarettes, wish he was around to run some of the equipment nowadays...he might enjoy AC and a radio LOL. And harvesting all fall without a major combine breakdown (with a 20 year old 9610, mind you) | |
