Subject: RE: Fringe vs corn belt

Farmington, Mo
The thing that keeps us competitive in "fringe" topography (not necessarily "fringe" location) is the fact we can raise 80-90% of the national average on corn with a land cost that is 40% of the heart of the belt. We are close to barge river terminals so basis is usually as good as anywhere and we can raise better than avg beans.

The thing that limits us is the same topography. Field sizes are small and odd shaped. Slope is an issue. And our overall enterprise size is limited due to the terrain limiting our equipment size and field efficiency. It just takes longer/acre to work a 20ish acre field that may have only one straight side(some don't) than a square 40 or 80...or glory be, an entire quarter section sized field!! What I would give for that...
