That being said, buying your production back on the futures market is definitely nowhere close to the same as having said production in your possession. I know this from personal experience, lol.



Buying your crop back on the board or holding it in the bin are both speculative aren't they?


As to the original question, I am a strict hedger. I don't speculate with the futures market, so when I sell I either have the crop growing or I intend to grow it.

That is my personal rule.

I also hedged a little bit of 2018 wheat on the spike this summer, but I would have planted some regardless. I wouldn't have hedged though without intentions to plant.
