Subject: RE: New law requiring Septic Tank pumping in Ontario

southern MN
Modern folk want to put garbage disposals in, water softeners, clothes washers that run every day, and so forth.

Septic tanks break down poo and other organic stuff pretty well, but dirt that washes off clothes and hands doesn't break down, stringy vegtable fibers that would go through a garbage disposal don't break down very fast at all, modern 'comfort' toilet papers that say they work don't really break down in a septic tank, lot of folk flush Kleenex and worse paper and plastic and latex items down the toilet.

This stuff builds up on the bottom of the tank. Some folks can go 20 years and never put enough bad stuff in to cause any buildup. Other folks get their tank full of junk in less than 3 years......

Depends what you do and how big your tank is.

Govt has typical 'one size fits all' regulations and so you are punished if you are a good person and try to treat your septic right and let it work as its meant to.
