Unless you are selling Bulls you don't need purbreds and big fancy record books. It's pretty simple. Buy good cows, keep the best heifers, breed to good Bulls. Cull late Breds, cull poor doers, cull any problems. Soon you'll have a reputation of good cattle.


Suggestion - - - if you only keep your 'best' heifers you may not be helping yourself.
To most people 'best' is biggest = weight gain.
Keeping those heifers will drive your mature cow size up likely about 35 to 50# per generation.
In 6/7 years your mature cows have gone from 1400 to 1700#.

I'd not be thinking that that is what you want to advocate.
(Cows size change would mean about a 15-19% greater input costs for maybe 7 to 10% greater return.)
