South central kansas | Read Gordon Prange book "at dawn we slept" on the Pearl Harbor attach and they events leading up to it. And then the Martin-Bellinger report that accurately predicted crucial elements of the attack.
While elements of the US population had a racist and decidedly wrong view of the Japanese, there were certain critical elements in the US military who had seen what was going on in China and knew the capabilities of the Japanese military and knew Japanese military leaders like Yamamoto were fully capable of attacking the US.
Your description of the real reason for the attack, IMO, is very, very, very, minuscule "real" reason for the attack. Look up the naval operational plan orange, the US naval plan that was in effect previous to the attack.
