They said the green coating on the pipe is a fairly recent development and that it's actually tougher than the pipe itself. The welded joints were sandblasted before being coated.
When I worked in the oil field we referred it to as "fusion bond coating". It's some tough stuff. The weakest link is the joints. Proper care needs to be taken after its welded and before it goes in the ground.
