Southwest Michigan | I was always told that wheat in good weather conditions would supress the alfalfa/hay stand too much for a consistent hay stand, like you might have bare spots in hay field. I guess it depends on your expected hay yield goals.
I combined a wheat field, then waited almost a month, burned it down(chemical) and notilled alfalfa/Timothy/and a few oats(less than 1/2 bushel per acre). Stand came up nice in fall, oats almost headed, no harvest, in the spring had some wheat came up in a few spots and competed hard with alfalfa and left small bare spots. Those might have been where the wheat was lodged some, I had thought I took care of that with the burn down though.
I think similar to 17821x a spring crop might be a better option. Or you would/might have to give up wheat yield for more "room" to let the hay grow, like thinner wheat stand. | |
