The actual problem is people.

If there wasnt so darn many people to feed, we could all go organic, wife/ girlfriend could quit showering, we could all garden in our bare feet, sing kum ba ya and never run an engine again.

There we go, emissions problem solved. Less people, less need for commerical ag. "Please save the environment, help control the human population, get your humans spayed or neutered." I know a certain area of the country where we can start...Washinton DC!! :)

Until then, the actual common sense solution was 4 valve per cylinder with HPCR and VGT, but no DEF ,EGR, DPF etc. It was efficient, powerful, and pretty reliable. But, if you burn less fuel, that means there are less fuel tankers on the road, and less big oil is being consumed. So, lets create a mindless system of busywork to keep more people (back to the too many people issue) busy to keep pumping the economy. Less reliable equipment means more jobs!!!

So, the actual "killer of the world" is not NOX out of a diesel engine. Its too darn many people with too high of a standard of living, so we gotta keep pumping the economy, and nothing pumps an economy like buying new stuff that does not last very long and is not very reliable. This whole EPA tier system is just an economy improver/ job creator, not an earth saver.

The actual earth friendly solution is to go back to the way our grandparents lived, and only have one kid, but not many people enjoyed the good ol days enough to go back, so here we are... :)

So, in closing, DEF sucks, but its better than full EGR, so people deal with it, but no one actually likes it.

The Pretender, I think what most people are upset about is that the reliability and fuel efficiency is going backwards, and that is not sitting well with many folks' common sense. They want the peak of efficiency and reliability out of the piece of equipment they bought, not a future jobs package.
