Subject: RE: Replacement windows

Lots of complaints over the 'expensive' brands. They are sold on marketing hype,,,and name recognition.

No direct experience but have heard the top of the line Andersons are okay but expensive...Pella and Marvin and lessor grades of Andersen all are over marketed and over hyped.

I do have direct experience with Gerkin replacement windows,,,single hung and they work fine and great performance after 15 years. Also have put Jeld-Wen new construction windows with the nailing fin in a couple houses and get no complaints there either.

Single hungs work fine,,,everyone is either running furnace or AC anyway,,,very little window opening these days anyway. Advantage of double hungs is cleaning,,,altho some people dont do it anyway. Disadvantage of casements is try finding replacement hardware 20 years down the road,,,never saw a casement without hardware problems(over 15 years old)

IF you are having all these probs like water and wind,,,,,seems that goes back to the install. ONE contractor 'tried' to tell me even caulking wasnt required on a nailing fin cause it sealed itself,,,,he didnt work here after that. Windows need caulked, butyl taped, metal counterflashed, and double flashed and no nails in that part as well as siding being correctly installed for its type next to windows and doors OR your asking for weather and rot to give you another project in the future,,,all too soon.

Google Alberts roofing and siding from somewhere way back east as to how and why,,,,anything less and your doomed. You might never find a contractor to install them per instructions so do it yourself if needed.(but do it right)
