I use a small set of vice grip pliers to get a better grip on the band tubing. Just clamp on to end of band opposite of clip. I pull band as tight as I can then slip into clip. Never had a problem with not being tight enough. Think Wayne's idea of having bands warmed up sounds like a good one.
