Gary has it right. I have QB on a desktop and a laptop, with one license.

The laptop is getting a little squirrelly and I have a new one ready to take its place. I wouldn't mind shelling out $199 for the QB2015 update, if necessary, but am unsure how the payroll migration will work. Might have to buy that again, too? What a pain. I use QB because it is the current quasi-standard, not because I particularly like it. Intuit support is awful.

As someone else noted, Quicken will balance your checkbook for a lot less. And do take a look at open source software.
